Port information & tips for Mamoutzou (Mayotte)

Mamoutzou is the vibrant heart of Mayotte and welcomes travelers with a fascinating blend of French lifestyle and exotic African flair in the midst of one of the world's largest coral lagoons. The city captivates with its lively atmosphere, colorful markets, and the crystal-clear water of the Indian Ocean. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the colorful Marché de Mamoutzou with its fragrant spices, the central Place du Mariage, and the picturesque Pointe Mahabou, which offers wide views over the coastline. Cruise ships usually anchor at sea and reach the Gare Maritime de Mamoutzou comfortably thanks to short tender distances, which is located directly in the city center and offers a first-class starting point for discovery tours.

Mamoudzou on Mayotte is a rather rarely visited but fascinating cruise port in the Indian Ocean. Since it is a French overseas department, the port is typically accessible via Fly & Cruise, with cruise ships usually anchoring offshore and passengers being transferred by tender boats to the Mamoudzou Waterfront Tender Landing Pier on Grande-Terre. A dedicated cruise terminal with extensive facilities is located near the city center. Due to the long journey from the DACH region, arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi International Airport (DZA) on the smaller island of Petite-Terre. There are no direct flights from the DACH region to Mayotte; travel usually involves stopovers, often in Paris (ORY or CDG) or other major hubs, for example with Air France, Air Austral, or Corsair. A flight time of over ten hours should be taken into account for planning.

Transfer to the Port

It is approximately 7 kilometers from Dzaoudzi Airport (DZA) to Mamoudzou. The transfer includes a short drive to the ferry terminal on Petite-Terre and an approximately 15-minute ferry crossing ("La Barge") to Mamoudzou on Grande-Terre. This ferry operates regularly, about every 30 minutes, and is an affordable transfer option. The total transfer time from the airport to Mamoudzou, including the ferry crossing, is approximately 20 to 21 minutes.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

An overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Mamoudzou or Dzaoudzi is highly recommended due to the long flight time and necessary transfers, ensuring a relaxed start to your cruise. Hotels can be found in both Mamoudzou and on Petite-Terre near the airport. Some accommodations in Mamoudzou also offer a free airport transfer.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
