Returning to the ship
Vila do Maio in Cape Verde is a charming island destination that, due to its island location and distance from the DACH region, is primarily reached by plane followed by island transfers. Direct travel by car or train is not possible, and arriving earlier than the day of embarkation is recommended for a relaxed start.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region usually involves long-haul flights to the international airports in Cape Verde, Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID) on Sal or Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) in Praia on Santiago. From there, domestic flights operate to the small Maio Airport (MMO), located just a few kilometers from Vila do Maio. These flights take about 15-20 minutes.
Island Transfer & Ferry
From Maio Airport (MMO), you can easily reach the port of Vila do Maio in a short time by taxi or minibus. An alternative travel option is the ferry from Praia on Santiago, which operates several times a week to Maio and has a travel time of about 2-3 hours. It is recommended to check ferry connections in advance, as these can vary.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and potential flight schedule changes, an overnight stay on one of the main islands (Sal or Santiago) or directly on Maio is highly recommended. Hotels in Praia or Santa Maria (Sal) are ideal for arriving relaxed before the cruise and enjoying the island atmosphere before transferring to Maio.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
