Returning to the ship

The Whitsunday Islands, a tropical paradise in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, are primarily accessible to cruise passengers from the DACH region via Airlie Beach on the mainland. Large cruise ships often anchor in Pioneer Bay and transport their guests via tender boat to the marinas in town, while smaller ships and ferries to the islands depart directly from the terminals at the Port of Airlie or the Coral Sea Marina. Due to the long journey from Europe, an overnight stay in Airlie Beach before embarkation is recommended to start your island adventure relaxed.

Airplane

The Whitsunday Islands are served by two main airports: Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) near Proserpine on the mainland and Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) directly on Hamilton Island. Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) is located about 38 kilometers inland from Airlie Beach. From there, convenient shuttle buses and private transfers are available, taking you directly to Airlie Beach in about 30 to 45 minutes for approximately 25 AUD (one way) or 45 AUD (round trip). Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) offers direct flights from Australian metropolises such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Cairns. From Hamilton Island, you can reach the Port of Airlie via an approximately 60-minute ferry ride with Cruise Whitsundays.

Auto

The journey to Airlie Beach by car is via the Bruce Highway (A1). The turn-off to Airlie Beach is located about one kilometer north of Proserpine and leads you directly into town after a scenic drive of around 24 kilometers (approx. 20 minutes). From Brisbane, the driving time is about 12 to 13 hours (approx. 1100 km), while from Cairns you will arrive in about 7.5 hours (approx. 625 km). In Airlie Beach, both the Port of Airlie and the Coral Sea Marina offer paid short-term and long-term parking, which can often be managed via the EasyPark app. In addition, there are providers like Whitsunday Parking that offer valet services and secure storage options. Some hotels, such as Mantra Club Croc, also offer free parking for guests.

Train

For travelers within Australia, Proserpine Station is the relevant point of contact. The "Spirit of Queensland" train from Queensland Rail Travel connects Brisbane and Cairns with Proserpine. From Proserpine Station, there are regular RailBus connections as well as public buses (e.g., Translink line 860) to Airlie Beach, which take about 36 to 40 minutes. Alternatively, taxis are available and cover the route in about 21 minutes. For a seamless onward journey, it is recommended to book transfers from the station to the terminal in Airlie Beach in advance.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
