Returning to the ship

The cruise port of Cowes on the Isle of Wight is a charming destination that requires a picturesque journey by ferry across the Solent, as the island is not directly connected to the mainland. Larger cruise ships usually anchor offshore and conveniently transport their guests by tender boats to Trinity Landing in the heart of Cowes.

Arrival by Car & Ferry

For arrival by car, first head to the ferry ports on the mainland. Southampton (for Red Funnel Ferries) is easily accessible via the M3, M27, and A303/A36 motorways. Red Funnel offers ferry connections from Southampton to East Cowes (for vehicles, approx. 55 minutes crossing) and West Cowes (for foot passengers only with Red Jet, approx. 25 minutes). Parking options such as the Triangle Car Park are available at the Red Funnel Terminal in Southampton, which can also offer private taxi transfers to the cruise terminals in Southampton. Alternatively, you can use Wightlink Ferries from Lymington to Yarmouth (approx. 40 minutes) or from Portsmouth Gunwharf to Fishbourne (approx. 45 minutes). Parking is available at the Wightlink ports in Lymington and Portsmouth Gunwharf. Please note that parking directly in Cowes is very limited and prior booking is essential if you wish to take your car onto the island.

Arrival by Train & Ferry

The Isle of Wight is excellently connected to the British rail network, as you can easily reach the ferry terminals on the mainland with combined train and ferry tickets. Southampton Central is a major rail hub from which a free shuttle bus reaches the Red Funnel ferry terminals at Town Quay in about 5 to 8 minutes. For Wightlink ferries, Lymington Pier station is directly connected to the ferry terminal to Yarmouth, while Portsmouth Harbour station is located directly inside the ferry terminal for the FastCat connection to Ryde Pier Head. Through tickets to destinations on the Isle of Wight are available.

Arrival by Plane & Transfer

The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Southampton Airport (SOU), located about 32 kilometers north of the island. From Southampton Airport, you can take a train directly to Southampton Airport Parkway Station, from where you can use a train connection to Southampton Central and then take the shuttle to the Red Funnel Terminal. For international travelers, the larger London airports such as Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW) are also options. From there, bus or train connections exist to the ferry ports in Southampton or Portsmouth. Arriving the day before is recommended to reach the ferry in a relaxed manner and avoid potential delays. Cowes itself does not have traditional cruise terminal infrastructure; passengers are brought from the ships anchoring in the Solent to Trinity Landing by tender boat.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
