From the port in Avatiu, you can quickly reach the heart of the island's capital, Avarua, thanks to its central location. The connections are excellent, allowing you for a relaxed start to your shore excursion immediately after leaving the ship or tender.
On Foot
You can comfortably reach the center of Avarua with its colorful markets and shops in about 5 to 10 minutes. The path leads along the coastal road and offers wonderful views of the lagoon even during the short walk.
Island Buses
The characteristic buses circle the island continuously both clockwise and anti-clockwise and stop directly on the main road near the harbor. This connection is ideal for exploring the entire coast and flexibly reaching the dream beaches of Rarotonga.
Taxi
Local taxis are available directly at the port area and will take you quickly and safely to secluded bays or resorts. Additionally, the vehicles can be easily used for private island tours, offering you a very personal way to get around.
To make the most of your stay on Rarotonga, a combination of the charming island capital and the paradisical lagoons in the east of the island is recommended.
Avarua & Punanga Nui Market

Ideally, start your excursion directly after arrival in the morning to make the most of the gentle breeze and clear water, and plan your return to the port generously about two hours before departure.
The return journey to the Port of Avatiu is very relaxed and safe thanks to the island's clear layout. Since Rarotonga is a tender port, please allow sufficient time for the transfer back to the ship via the tender boats.
Local Island Buses
The colorful buses circle the island continuously in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions, stopping directly at the Punanga Nui Market in the immediate vicinity of the port entrance. Thanks to these regular connections, you can travel from popular locations like Muri Beach back to the tender pier comfortably and on time.
Taxi
Taxis are available for the return journey in the town center of Avarua as well as in front of major resorts such as the Edgewater or the Pacific Resort. Additionally, drivers can be easily called by phone to take you directly to the Port of Avatiu, allowing you to stick to your schedule in a relaxed manner.
On Foot
From the main town of Avarua, you can walk back to the harbor basin along the coastal road within a few minutes. The path is flat and easy to find, as the port facilities and the boats in the Port of Avatiu provide excellent orientation even from a distance.
