Port information & tips for Sapzurro Bay
Sapzurro Bay is a pristine natural paradise on the Colombian Caribbean coast and marks the northernmost point of South America, right before the border with Panama. The village captivates with its secluded location in the middle of dense rainforest and crystal-clear water, offering an exceptionally peaceful atmosphere thanks to the absence of road traffic. Highlights include the white sandy beach of Playa Sapzurro, the hike to the La Miel border crossing, and the picturesque coastal path to Capurganá. Cruise ships usually anchor in the protected bay, and guests reach the mainland by tender boat at the central Muelle de Sapzurro. From this landing point, the charming village center and all natural treasures are easily accessible on foot thanks to short distances.
The bay of Sapzurro in Colombia's remote Chocó department is a paradise destination that presents itself to travelers from the DACH region as a unique Fly & Cruise experience. Since there is no road connection, arrival is exclusively via a combination of plane and boat, with a relaxed start ensured by a pre-cruise overnight stay.
Airplane
For international guests from the DACH region, a flight to Colombia's largest airports, such as El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá or José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) in Medellín, is recommended. From there, continue with a domestic flight: the nearest airport is Apartadó (APO), from where you will need a bus or taxi ride to the coastal town of Necoclí or Turbo. Another option is the smaller Acandí Airport (CPB), which offers more direct access to Capurganá and thus to Sapzurro.
Transfer & Boat
After arriving in Apartadó or Acandí, the route leads by taxi or bus to the coastal towns of Necoclí or Turbo. From here, boats ("lanchas") depart daily to take you to Capurganá. The crossing from Necoclí to Capurganá takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. From Capurganá, you can reach Sapzurro in just 5 to 10 minutes by local boat or via an approximately 1.5-hour hiking trail through the jungle. Please note that the sea can be rough between December and February, and it is recommended to travel with plastic bags for your luggage to protect it from getting wet.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Europe, the multi-stage transfers, and the potentially rough seas, especially in the winter months, an overnight stay in Medellín, Cartagena, or in the coastal towns of Necoclí/Capurganá before embarkation is strongly advised. This allows for a relaxed start to the trip and buffers against possible delays. In Sapzurro itself and in nearby Capurganá, you will find numerous charming accommodations, from hostels to eco-lodges, which provide a perfect base for exploring the region.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
