Port information & tips for Thursday Island
Thursday Island, also known as Waiben, is the cultural heart of the Torres Strait Islands and impresses with its authentic charm and a fascinating blend of history and tradition. The relaxed island atmosphere is reflected in the palm-lined streets and the turquoise waters washing against the coast. The most significant sights include the historic Green Hill Fort with its panoramic views, the Gab Titui Cultural Centre, and the historic Quetta Cathedral. Cruise ships usually use tender boats to reach the centrally located Engineers Jetty, which is situated directly in the heart of the small island capital. Thanks to this excellent connection, all attractions, cafes, and local markets are within easy walking distance and invite you to an unforgettable shore excursion.
Thursday Island, a unique destination in the heart of the Torres Strait, is primarily accessible to cruise guests from the DACH region via Fly & Cruise. As cruise ships anchor off the island, embarkation takes place conveniently by tender boat to the Engineers Jetty in Port Kennedy, the central arrival point on the southern shore of the island.
Airplane
Arrival is via Horn Island Airport (HID), the closest airport to Thursday Island, located about 8 to 9 kilometers away. After long-haul flights from the DACH region to Australia, connecting flights to Cairns Airport (CNS) and from there direct connections to Horn Island are recommended. The combined flight and ferry time from Cairns to Thursday Island is approximately 2 hours and 32 minutes.
Ferry & Local Transfer
From Horn Island Airport (HID), a short taxi transfer will take you to the ferry terminal on Horn Island. From there, a regular and only 15-minute ferry ride connects to Thursday Island, with ferry services often timed to coincide with the arrival and departure times of Qantas flights. Providers such as Rebel Marine/Torres Strait Tours and Kaiwalagal Ferries & Charters offer seamless transfers including bus rides from the airport to the ferry pier. On Thursday Island itself, much is within walking distance, and local minibuses are also available. Another ferry connection exists from Seisia on the mainland (Cape York) to Thursday Island, with a crossing of just over an hour.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Travel Planning
Due to the long journey and the necessary transfer chain, it is advisable to stay at least one day before the scheduled embarkation in Cairns or directly on Thursday Island or Horn Island. Hotels on Thursday Island are available, but early booking, especially for the peak travel season between June and September, is strongly recommended. Long-term parking for vehicles is available on Horn Island or in Seisia on the mainland, which should also be booked in advance, as Thursday Island itself does not offer specific parking facilities for cruise passengers.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
