Returning to the ship

Cu Lao Gieng is a charming island in the Mekong Delta that does not serve as a traditional ocean cruise port, but is rather a popular destination for river cruises. River cruise ships often dock here directly or bring their guests ashore in smaller boats to explore the authentic culture and impressive French-inspired architecture. For travelers from the DACH region, the journey requires a combination of a long-haul flight and a subsequent transfer in the Mekong Delta.

Airplane

The nearest and most relevant international airport for arrival is Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, the largest airport in southern Vietnam. Although there are no direct flights from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, there are excellent connections with only one stopover via major hubs in Asia or the Middle East. SGN Airport is located approximately 6 to 8 kilometers from the city center of Ho Chi Minh City.

Arrival in the Mekong Delta & Ferry

From Ho Chi Minh City, the onward journey to the Mekong Delta and the landing stages for Cu Lao Gieng typically takes place overland. My Tho is about 70 kilometers away and can be reached by car or bus in 1.5 to 2 hours. Can Tho, a larger city in the heart of the delta, is approximately 165 to 170 kilometers away; the journey takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours by bus, and around 2.5 to 3 hours by private car. From towns like Cho Moi in An Giang province or other locations in the delta, travelers then take a ferry or a small boat to get directly to Cu Lao Gieng. River cruises usually include these transfers directly from Ho Chi Minh City or Can Tho.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long international flight and subsequent transfers in the Mekong Delta, a stay in Ho Chi Minh City before the start of your river cruise is strongly recommended. This allows you to arrive relaxed, overcome jet lag, and start your adventure in the Mekong Delta well-rested. Many hotels in Ho Chi Minh City also offer flexible transfer options to the departure points of the river cruises.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
