Santorin is primarily visited by cruise ships as a tender port, with disembarkation taking place either at the Old Port below Fira or at the Athinios ferry port, depending on the cruise line. Santorini International Airport (JTR) is located about six kilometers from Fira and is served directly during the summer season by numerous airports in the DACH region such as Frankfurt, Berlin, or Vienna. As cruise ships anchor off the coast, you will reach the old port of Skala by tender boats. Thanks to the central location directly below the cliffs, you can easily reach the main town of Thira and other destinations via various climbs or by water.
Cable Car
The modern cable car is the most comfortable connection and takes you directly to Thira in just three minutes. Once at the top, you are right in the center and will also find quick connections for further exploration of the island at the nearby taxi stand.
Water Taxis and Speedboats
Small boats run regularly between the port of Skala and Ammoudi Bay below Oia. This connection allows for a convenient journey to the famous village of Oia and simultaneously offers an impressive perspective of the steep crater walls from the sea.
On Foot (Karavolades Stairs)
Active visitors use the historic stone staircase with its 587 steps to reach the main town on foot. The climb takes about 20 to 30 minutes and offers hikers continuous wide views of the caldera and the waiting ships thanks to the serpentine path.

In the winding alleys, you will find excellent cafés and small art galleries, perfect for a stylish break while you enjoy the exclusive atmosphere. Ideally, take one of the first cable cars in the morning to explore the village before the peak visitor times, and plan your return to the cable car station generously with a time buffer to be back at the port punctually and relaxed.
Since cruise ships in the caldera off Santorini lie at anchor, the town of Fira is the central starting point for the return journey by tender boat from the old port of Skala.
Cable Car
The cable car is the most comfortable connection between the main town of Fira and the port of Skala located at the foot of the cliffs, and also offers a fantastic view over the bay. Due to the popularity of this means of transport, plan for a time buffer so that you can enjoy the short ride down to the valley relaxed and reach the waiting tender boats directly.
Bus and Taxi
Excursionists from Oia or the coastal towns use the regular KTEL buses to the central bus station in Fira or take a taxi to the nearby main square, Plateia Theotokopoulou. From these central points, simply stroll through the charming pedestrian zones to the cable car station to reach the meeting point for the transfer to the ship safely and on time.
On Foot
The traditional Karavolades staircase leads in wide serpentines from Fira down to the water and is a wonderful option for active guests. The path is clearly signposted and easy to find thanks to the solid construction as well as the clear route leading directly to the quay, so you can reach the port within about 20 to 30 minutes while always keeping the ship in view.
