Port information & tips for Opopel
Sihanoukville is Cambodia's most important gateway to the sea and delights as a vibrant coastal paradise directly on the Gulf of Thailand. The city impresses with a fascinating mix of tropical serenity and modern flair, while the wide sandy beaches and warm, turquoise waters create an inviting holiday atmosphere. Cultural highlights in the vicinity include the magnificent Wat Leu Pagoda with its impressive panoramic view, as well as the lively Phsar Leu Market and the relaxed Sokha Beach. Cruise ships dock at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, which, thanks to its location only about five kilometers from the city center, provides travelers with convenient access to the most important sights and the picturesque coastal sections of the region.
The "Opopel" port is not known as a cruise port in Cambodia. Instead, the Port of Sihanoukville serves as Cambodia's most important deep-water port and a port of call for ocean cruise ships. For travelers from the DACH region, arrival by plane followed by a transfer is the most common method, and due to the long flight duration, a pre-cruise hotel stay is highly recommended.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Sihanouk International Airport (KOS). For international long-haul flights from the DACH region, however, Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) is often the primary point of arrival. From there, you can reach Sihanoukville via the new highway in about 2.5 hours by private transfer or bus.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Sihanouk International Airport (KOS), you can reach the port or the city by taxi or tuk-tuk, with the port located about 5 to 10 kilometers from the city center. Since the port area is an industrial zone and walking independently is not permitted, free shuttle buses take passengers to the port exit, where taxis and tuk-tuks are available for onward travel. Cruise lines also often offer organized transfers.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the long travel times from the DACH region, an overnight stay in Sihanoukville or Phnom Penh on the day before embarkation is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed arrival and acclimatization. In Sihanoukville, numerous hotels along the beaches offer options for a pleasant stay before the start of your cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
