Port information & tips for Scenic Cruising Gulf of Bothnia
The Gulf of Bothnia in the far north of the Baltic Sea captivates with its untouched nature and the fascinating interplay of water and land. This region is characterized by impressive post-glacial land uplift and offers an atmosphere full of peace and authentic Nordic magic thanks to crystal-clear water and dense coastal forests. Cultural highlights include the UNESCO World Heritage Site Gammelstad Church Town with its historical red wooden houses, the Norrbottens Museum, and the vast archipelago of the surrounding area. Ships dock in the port of Luleå at the central Södra Hamnen pier, which is just a few minutes' walk from the city center and serves as an ideal starting point for exploring nature as well as the charming shopping streets of the northern Swedish metropolis.
Kemi, located at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland, is a unique cruise port and the gateway to Lapland, known for its Arctic experiences, especially in winter. Cruise ships usually dock at the Ajos deep-water port, from where the city center is easily reached by transfer. As the terminal itself is more industrial in nature, onward travel to the city center is usually via organized cruise line shuttles.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Kemi-Tornio Airport (KEM), which is located about 6 kilometers north of Kemi city center. Finnair offers direct flights from Helsinki to Kemi-Tornio Airport. For transfers to the port or city center, taxis and private shuttle services are available, providing a comfortable journey of about 8 minutes with costs around 25 to 30 euros. Due to the often long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay before the cruise is recommended for a relaxed start.
Train
Kemi is very well connected to the Finnish rail network thanks to the centrally located Kemi Central Station (Kemi Rautatieasema). There are convenient train connections from various regions of Finland. It is about 10 to 12 kilometers from the station in the city center to the Ajos cruise terminal. The journey to the terminal is comfortable by taxi or local bus.
Car
Arriving by car is straightforward thanks to the well-developed E4 highway, which connects Kemi directly from the north and south. Since the Ajos cruise terminal is primarily used for industrial purposes, direct tourist parking facilities or Park & Cruise providers at the port itself are limited. However, travelers arriving with their own vehicle will find parking options in Kemi city center and should inquire directly with their cruise line for specific long-term parking offers.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
