Returning to the ship

Kalanggaman Island, known for its spectacular sandbar and crystal-clear water, is a popular destination for luxury and expedition cruises in the Philippines. Since the island is uninhabited and has no traditional port facilities, arrival for cruise guests usually takes place by tender boat from their ship. Logistical planning for travelers from the DACH region requires careful coordination of international flights, local transfers, and potentially a pre-cruise overnight stay to reach the picturesque island comfortably.

Airplane

For traveling to Kalanggaman Island, a combination of long-haul flights and domestic flights is the most efficient way. The nearest major airports are Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) in Cebu and Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (TAC) in Tacloban City, Leyte. Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) is the primary international airport and offers various connections from hubs, while Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (TAC) serves as an important national hub for flights from Manila or Cebu. Flight time from Manila to Tacloban is approximately one hour.

Transfer and Shuttle

From the airports, the journey to Kalanggaman Island is multi-stage: first, you travel by land or sea to Palompon in Leyte, the main starting point for the island. From Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (TAC) in Tacloban, vans or buses run to Palompon, with the journey taking about 3 to 4 hours for the approximately 120 kilometers. From Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), travelers can take a ferry from Cebu Pier to Palompon, which takes between 2.5 and 6.5 hours depending on the type of ferry. Alternatively, a domestic flight from Cebu to Tacloban followed by the land journey to Palompon is possible. Once in Palompon, guests register at the Palompon Eco-Tourism Office, from where the approximately one-hour boat trip to Kalanggaman Island begins.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long international flight times and the multi-stage journey with transfers and boat trips, a pre-cruise overnight stay is recommended. Since Kalanggaman Island itself is uninhabited and offers no hotels or restaurants – only camping options with prior permission – an overnight stay in Palompon is advisable. Hotels are also available in Cebu City or Tacloban City to arrive relaxed after the long-haul flight and continue the journey the next day well-rested. Many boat trips to the island start in the morning, which is why an overnight stay in Palompon before the excursion to the island is advantageous.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.

Useful tips

The Sandbar of Kalanggaman

The legendary sandbar of Kalanggaman Island is directly accessible from your ship's anchorage by tender boat and offers a paradisiacal panorama of powdery white sand and crystal-clear, turquoise water. This location is ideal for a relaxed sunbath and also offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling in the colorful coral reefs right off the coast. Thanks to the shaded wooden pavilions and the untouched nature, you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere here far away from mass tourism. Ideally, visit the sandbar directly after arrival in the morning to make the most of the tides for perfect photos, and plan your return to the ship for a relaxed conclusion about sixty minutes before the last tender ride.

Returning to the ship

The way back from the picturesque sandbars to the ship is very simply organized on this natural island and can be managed without stress. Thanks to the manageable size, you will find your way to the jetty at any time without detours.

Cruise line tender service

The return journey to the cruise ship takes place directly via the ship's own tender boats, which dock at the western end of the island near the large sandbar. These boats run at regular intervals and, thanks to the clearly visible organization, will bring you safely back to your floating hotel.

On foot to the meeting point

Since Kalanggaman Island is completely car-free, you can easily stroll back to the meeting point over the soft sandy beach or the shaded paths in the interior. Orientation is easy thanks to the island's distinctive shape, and you can reach the jetty from any point on the island in just a few minutes.

Local bangkas and helpers

On-site, friendly coordinators and staff from the Palompon tourism office support guests with boarding the outrigger boats. These helpers are stationed centrally at the marked meeting points near the wooden pavilions and will be happy to provide you with information about the next departure times so that you can enjoy your stay in relaxation until the very end.
