Port information & tips for Bolungarvík

Bolungarvík is a picturesque gem in the Icelandic Westfjords and welcomes travelers with an impressive backdrop of steep mountain slopes and the deep blue North Atlantic. The authentic atmosphere of this northernmost fishing village in the region combines maritime tradition with untouched wilderness and offers a particularly exclusive nature experience thanks to its seclusion. Cruise ships dock directly at the quay of Bolungarvíkurhöfn, providing direct access to the charming town center and its cultural treasures, all of which are within easy walking distance.

Bolungarvík in the Westfjords of Iceland is a charming destination best reached by cruise guests from the DACH region by plane followed by onward travel. Due to its remote location and often long journey, a pre-cruise overnight stay is recommended.

Airplane

The nearest international airport is Keflavík (KEF) near Reykjavík, which is served by direct flights from numerous German, Austrian, and Swiss airports. From KEF, onward travel to Bolungarvík is necessary, either by domestic flight or rental car. The small Ísafjörður Airport (IFJ) is located about 15 minutes by car from Bolungarvík and is served several times daily from Reykjavík (RKV). The flight time is approximately 45 minutes.

Auto

From Reykjavík, you can reach Bolungarvík via the Ring Road (Route 1) and then via Westfjord roads 60 and 61. The journey takes about 6 to 8 hours depending on weather and road conditions. The roads in the Westfjords can be demanding and require four-wheel drive, especially in winter. Parking for cruise guests is usually found directly in the harbor area or in the immediate vicinity of the town, mostly free of charge. There are no special, guarded long-term parking lots like in larger ports, but the town is safe.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long travel time from Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and the potentially challenging road conditions, especially outside the summer months, arriving in Bolungarvík the day before your embarkation is strongly recommended. Hotels and guesthouses in Reykjavík or Ísafjörður are ideal for a relaxed overnight stay before you embark on the final leg to your cruise ship. This allows you to enjoy the breathtaking landscape of the Westfjords without time pressure and to be at the port on time for embarkation.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
