Amarna is a fascinating destination on the eastern bank of the Nile and whisks travelers away to the former capital of the visionary Pharaoh Akhenaten. The extensive archaeological site impresses with its location in a picturesque desert plain and offers a profound atmosphere full of history and mysticism thanks to its well-preserved ruins. Among the most significant highlights are the richly decorated Northern Tombs, the imposing Small Aten Temple, and the striking boundary stelae of the ancient city of Akhetaten. Cruise ships dock directly at the Tel el-Amarna pier, from where the central excavation sites and the informative visitor center are easily accessible in just a few minutes using local transport thanks to short distances.

Airplane
Travel to Egypt is usually via international airports such as Cairo (CAI) or Luxor (LXR). Cairo is located approximately 310 kilometers north of Amarna, while Luxor is situated around 400 kilometers to the south. Many airlines offer direct flights or convenient connections from German, Austrian, and Swiss airports to these important hubs, from where Nile cruises depart or corresponding transfers are organized.
Transfer to the Nile Cruise
Since Amarna is primarily a stop on Nile cruises, the actual journey to the ship usually takes place in larger cities like Cairo or Luxor. Cruise lines and tour operators often offer organized transfers from the airport to the embarkation port for this purpose. A taxi or a private shuttle is another comfortable option for a relaxed journey from the airport to the starting point of your river cruise. When embarking in Cairo, onward travel often takes place by train or domestic flight to the start of the actual Nile cruise further south.
Arrival as part of a Nile Cruise
Amarna itself is a historic landing stage for Nile cruise ships operating on routes between Luxor and Aswan, sometimes with connections to and from Cairo. You do not reach Amarna directly, but as a fixed part of your booked river cruise. An overnight stay in Cairo or Luxor before the start of your cruise is particularly recommended due to the long flight times and for acclimatization, allowing you to begin your journey relaxed.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
