Returning to the ship

Ilimanaq (Claushavn) is a remote cruise destination in Greenland, characterized by its isolated location amidst a breathtaking Arctic landscape. The harbor is not accessible by road; arrival is primarily by plane followed by a boat transfer, which is already part of the unique Greenland experience.

Airplane

Travel from the DACH region typically involves flying via Copenhagen (CPH) or Keflavík (KEF) to Ilulissat Airport (JAV), the nearest major airport in Greenland. Air Greenland offers seasonal flights from Ilulissat to Ilimanaq Heliport (XIQ), but direct international flights to Ilimanaq are not available. Due to the long journey and potential weather-related delays, an overnight stay in Ilulissat before embarkation is recommended.

Boat Transfer

Since there are no roads to Ilimanaq, onward travel from Ilulissat is usually by boat. Numerous local providers and the Ilimanaq Lodge organize shuttle services that take you directly to Ilimanaq in about 30 to 60 minutes through the UNESCO World Heritage Ilulissat Icefjord. This transfer is a highlight in itself, as you pass majestic icebergs and, with a little luck, may even spot whales. In winter, helicopter, dog sled, or snowmobile transfers from Ilulissat are also possible.

Pre-Cruise Hotel in Ilulissat

For a relaxed arrival in Ilimanaq, it is advisable to spend at least one night in Ilulissat before the day of embarkation. This provides a buffer for any flight delays and offers the opportunity to explore the region around the Ilulissat Icefjord. In Ilulissat, you will find various hotels such as Hotel Arctic or Best Western Plus Hotel Ilulissat, many of which offer a free airport shuttle. Please note that the harbor in Ilimanaq may have steps and uneven terrain, which is relevant for luggage planning and for persons with reduced mobility.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the harbor and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
