Taormina, the "Pearl of Sicily", is spectacularly perched on a rock overlooking the Ionian Sea and is considered one of Italy's most exclusive destinations. Taormina, a picturesque town in Sicily, is usually accessed by cruise ships via tender boats that take passengers to the nearby port of Giardini Naxos. For larger ships, the port of Messina often serves as a port of call, from where transfers to Taormina are organized.

Airplane

The nearest and busiest airport is Catania Fontanarossa (CTA), located around 65 kilometers south of Taormina. From there, you can easily reach Taormina by direct bus (Interbus) in about 60 to 90 minutes for approximately 7-8 Euros. A comfortable alternative is a private transfer, which takes about one hour to take you directly to your accommodation, with fixed prices starting at around 90-115 Euros for a standard vehicle. For a relaxed embarkation, it is recommended to arrive the day before due to the flight time from the DACH region.

Train

The relevant train station for Taormina is "Taormina-Giardini", located in the coastal district of Villagonia, below the hilltop old town. From Catania Centrale, trains run to Taormina-Giardini station in around 37 minutes. From the station, you can reach the center of Taormina in about 10 minutes by local bus or taxi. Taxi costs from the station to the city center are around 10-15 Euros.

Car & Parking

The A18 motorway connects Taormina directly with Messina and Catania, allowing for a smooth journey. For the historic old town of Taormina, two large, well-signposted parking garages are available: the Lumbi parking garage and the Porta Catania parking garage. From there, you can easily reach the center on foot or via the shuttle bus. There are also paid parking spaces in Giardini Naxos, although finding a spot can be challenging during the high season.

Cable Car (Funivia)

The cable car connects the Mazzarò coastal section directly with the center of Taormina and offers an impressive panoramic view over the coast during the short ride. You can easily reach the starting point by taxi or bus and float up into the town's alleys in just a few minutes.

Taxi

Licensed taxis wait for arriving cruise passengers directly at the Giardini Naxos pier. The drive up to the old town takes around 15 to 20 minutes and allows for a relaxed journey directly to the Porta Messina town gate or the Greek Theatre.

Public Buses (Interbus)

The blue buses of the Interbus company as well as the local Etna Trasporti run regularly between the coast and the central bus station of Taormina. This connection is inexpensive and reliable, allowing you to simultaneously enjoy the picturesque serpentine route with its views of the Ionian Sea.

Teatro Antico di Taormina

The ancient theater of Taormina is easily accessible from the port in Giardini Naxos in about twenty minutes by taxi or shuttle and offers one of the most spectacular views in the world with a direct view of Mount Etna and the coast. This history-steeped site impresses with its excellently preserved architecture and also invites you to a subsequent stroll through the charming streets of Corso Umberto, where excellent cafes and small boutiques invite you to linger. Ideally, visit the theater directly in the morning to enjoy the special atmosphere and the panorama before the larger crowds of visitors arrive, and plan your return journey to the ship about two hours before departure to end the day in a relaxed manner.

Returning to the ship

The way back from the picturesque old town of Taormina to the port in Giardini Naxos can be arranged in a relaxed manner thanks to the good connections and also offers fantastic views of the coast.

Taxi

Central taxi ranks are located at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele directly by the Porta Messina city gate and at Piazza San Pancrazio. Thanks to the short distance, the ride to the port takes about 15 minutes and brings you comfortably right to the pier of the tender boats.

Public Bus & Shuttle

The buses of the Interbus company run regularly from the central Terminal Bus in Via Dionisio Primo and stop directly on the coast of Giardini Naxos. In addition, many cruise lines provide their own shuttle buses that commute between the old town and the port, guaranteeing a punctual return.

On Foot

The walk down to the coast leads via winding staircases and offers hiking enthusiasts spectacular photo opportunities as well as a direct connection to the beach area. Plan about 40 minutes for this walk and use the clear signage towards Giardini Naxos for easy orientation.
