Port information & tips for Bisevo Island

The Croatian island of Biševo is a pristine natural jewel in the Adriatic Sea and a true paradise for explorers south of Vis. Thanks to its secluded location, the island impresses with an authentic atmosphere, crystal-clear water, and Mediterranean serenity. Absolute highlights include the world-famous Blue Cave (Modra špilja) with its magically glowing play of light, the impressive Monk Seal Cave (Medvedina špilja), and the picturesque sandy bay of Porat. Since the island does not have a large terminal, cruise ships usually anchor at sea off the coast. Guests reach the island comfortably by tender boat at the small pier of Mezuporat, from where the natural beauties of this car-free idyll are immediately accessible.

Returning to the ship

Bisevo Island, known for its famous Blue Grotto, is a picturesque, car-free island off the Croatian coast. A direct cruise port in the conventional sense does not exist here; arrival is primarily via boat excursions from the neighboring island of Vis or the mainland port of Split.

Airplane

The most convenient way to arrive from the DACH region is by plane to Split Airport (SPU), the nearest international airport to the Dalmatian coast. The airport is located about 20 kilometers from the Port of Split. From there, shuttle buses, public bus line 37, or taxis are available for transfer to the ferry terminal in Split. Arriving the day before is particularly recommended for longer flights to ensure a relaxed start to your island adventure.

Ferry & Boats

From the Port of Split, regular ferry connections take you to the island of Vis. The crossing takes between 1 hour 10 minutes and 2 hours 50 minutes, depending on the vessel (catamarans or conventional ferries). Ferries from companies such as Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka-Krilo operate year-round, and even several times a day in summer. Once on Vis, Bisevo and the Blue Grotto are best reached with local taxi or excursion boats departing from Komiza (approx. 45 minutes travel time to Mezuporat on Bisevo) or Vis Town. Please note that access to the Blue Grotto is only permitted with small, authorized boats from Mezuporat. Many providers also organize direct day trips to the Blue Grotto from Split or Hvar.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

A pre-cruise overnight stay is recommended for a stress-free onward journey to Bisevo Island. You will find numerous hotel options both in Split and on the island of Vis (e.g., in Komiza or Vis Town). A stay in Split allows you to explore the historic old town and provides easy access to the ferry terminal, which is centrally located next to the bus and main train station and also has good parking facilities for long-term parkers. An overnight stay on Vis shortens the boat trip to Bisevo and offers you the opportunity to explore the charming island of Vis before continuing your cruise or excursion.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually provide a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.

Useful tips

Modra Špilja

The world-famous Blue Grotto on the east coast of the island of Biševo is easily accessible by official shuttle boats from the port of Mezuporat and is considered one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the entire Adriatic. A visit is particularly worthwhile due to the fascinating light phenomenon that bathes the cave interior in a glowing azure blue and, thanks to its protected location, creates an almost mystical atmosphere. At the pier in Mezuporat, you will also find small, charming cafés that are ideal for a refreshment in the shade while enjoying the view of the picturesque bay. Ideally, start your excursion in the late morning to experience the full intensity of the colors, and plan your return to the port at least one hour before departure.

Returning to the ship

The return journey to the pier or the tender anchorage in Mezuporat Bay is very relaxed thanks to the short distances on the small island. Since Biševo is almost car-free, you can reach your ship safely and on time via the waterway or the charming walking trails.

Shuttle Boats and Barges

The small boats of the Blue Cave will take you directly back to the main pier in Mezuporat Bay after the tour. From there, the ship's own tender boats operate at short intervals and will bring you back to your cruise ship comfortably and safely in just a few minutes.
