Nearby, the soothing thermal pools of Pollurinn invite you to linger with panoramic views, while the striking Patreksfjarðarkirkja and the town's authentic maritime heritage are also impressive. Patreksfjörður, a picturesque harbor in the remote Westfjords of Iceland, is primarily accessible by air combined with further transfers or a longer journey by rental car due to its isolated location. A dedicated cruise terminal with extensive facilities is not to be expected here; ships usually dock at the pier in town.
Airplane
International arrival from the DACH region is via Keflavík International Airport (KEF) near Reykjavík, which is served by direct flights from numerous European cities. For onward travel to Patreksfjörður, a domestic flight to Patreksfjörður Regional Airport (PFJ) or to the nearby Bíldudalur Airport (BIU), which is about a 40-minute drive away, is recommended. These flights depart from the domestic Reykjavík Airport (RKV). Due to the long travel chain, arriving the day before embarkation and staying overnight in Reykjavík is strongly recommended to ensure a relaxed start to your cruise.
Domestic Flight & Transfer
There are regular flight connections from Reykjavík Airport (RKV) to Patreksfjörður (PFJ) or Bíldudalur (BIU). The flight time is approximately 45 to 60 minutes. From the small Patreksfjörður Airport, you can reach the harbor in a few minutes by taxi or pre-arranged shuttle. From Bíldudalur, a transfer by rental car or taxi is necessary, which takes you along scenic fjords to Patreksfjörður in about 40 minutes. Local taxi and shuttle services should be reserved in advance, as availability can be limited.
Rental Car & Arrival the Day Before
For the adventurous and travelers who want to explore Iceland's spectacular landscape, arriving by rental car is an attractive option. From the Greater Reykjavík area, the route initially follows the Ring Road (Hringvegur, Route 1) and then continues via the Westfjords roads (Route 60, Route 62) to Patreksfjörður. The drive is scenically stunning but can be demanding due to gravel roads and changing weather conditions, taking at least 6 to 8 hours of pure driving time. An overnight stay halfway or in Reykjavík before starting into the Westfjords is therefore advisable. Limited public parking is available in the town itself.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination – is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
