Port information & tips for Vestmanna (Streymoy)
Vestmanna is a picturesque port town on the west coast of the island of Streymoy and is considered one of the most fascinating natural paradises of the Faroe Islands. The region impresses with its dramatic fjord landscape, steep cliffs, and an untouched Nordic idyll that immediately captivates visitors. Absolute highlights include the impressive bird cliffs of Vestmannabjørgini, the fascinating Saga Museum, and the imposing mountain panoramas of the surrounding area. Cruise ships dock directly at the central quay of the port of Vestmanna (Vestmanna Havn), which is located right in the town center, so that local sights and the landing stage for the well-known excursion boats can be easily explored on foot thanks to the short distances.
Vestmanna on Streymoy, Faroe Islands, is a smaller but picturesque port that blends harmoniously into the impressive landscape. Travel from the DACH region is primarily by plane, as the Faroe Islands have no rail connections and are only accessible by sea via ferry connections from Denmark or Iceland.
Airplane
The nearest and only airport in the Faroe Islands is Vágar Airport (FAE), located on the island of Vágar. There are usually no direct flights from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland; instead, there are connections via Copenhagen (CPH) with Atlantic Airways or Scandinavian Airlines. Vágar Airport is located about 50 kilometers from Vestmanna.
Rental Car & Bus
From Vágar Airport (FAE), you can reach the main island of Streymoy via the impressive underwater road (Vágatunnilin). The drive to Vestmanna takes about 45 minutes by rental car. Various rental car companies are available at the airport. Alternatively, line 300 buses run from Tórshavn, the capital on Streymoy, to Vestmanna. Bus line 300 also connects Vágar Airport with Tórshavn, allowing for a transfer connection; however, the direct bus connection from Vágar to Vestmanna is not continuous. At the port of Vestmanna itself, parking is limited but usually sufficient for short-term parkers.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the necessary stopovers and the somewhat remote location of the Faroe Islands, arriving at least one day before the planned embarkation is recommended. An overnight stay in the capital, Tórshavn, is a good option, as there is a larger selection of hotels and restaurants, and the city is well-connected for traveling on to Vestmanna the next day in a relaxed manner.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
