Kaiteriteri is the golden gateway to the famous Abel Tasman National Park on New Zealand's South Island. This picturesque location impresses with its crystal-clear bays, characteristic honey-colored sandy beaches, and a relaxed, sun-drenched atmosphere amidst pristine coastal landscapes. Absolute highlights include guided kayak tours to the iconic Split Apple Rock as well as hikes on the Abel Tasman Coast Track, which delights with its lush vegetation and fantastic viewpoints. As larger cruise ships usually anchor offshore, visitors arrive comfortably by tender boats at the central Kaiteriteri Wharf. This landing point is located directly on the main beach and also provides immediate access to the charming town center as well as various local tour operators on site.

Kaiteriteri is an idyllic anchorage in New Zealand's Tasman Region, primarily serving smaller expedition ships and acting as a tender port. Larger cruise ships often dock in Port Nelson, about an hour away, from where guests can easily reach Kaiteriteri by coach. The small coastal town does not have its own cruise terminals; embarkation takes place directly at Kaiteriteri Beach via tender boats.
Airplane
For international guests from the DACH region, traveling by plane is the most common option. The nearest airport is Nelson Airport (NSN), located approximately 32 to 34 kilometers from Kaiteriteri. Flights from Wellington, Auckland, and Christchurch connect Nelson with New Zealand's larger hubs, which you can reach from Europe. Arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended to start your cruise adventure relaxed.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Nelson Airport (NSN), you can reach Kaiteriteri in various ways. A convenient option is the local bus connections, for example with "The Better Bus", which take you to Kaiteriteri in about 1 hour and 25 minutes to 3 hours 11 minutes (with a transfer). Additionally, specialized shuttle services like Tapu Bay Shuttle offer direct transfers. Taxis are also available, with the journey taking approximately 48 minutes.
Car
After your flight to Nelson, continuing your journey with a rental car is a good option, as various rental car companies are represented at Nelson Airport. The drive to Kaiteriteri takes about 50 minutes and leads through picturesque landscapes via State Highway 6 and State Highway 60. Free day parking is available in Kaiteriteri itself. During the peak season from mid-December to the end of February, however, finding a parking space may take longer, and for overnight parkers, there are limited free spaces at the Martin Farm Road Trailer Park, about a 15-minute walk from the check-in area. Please note that parking spaces are not secured.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
