Port information & tips for Toyama
Toyama is a fascinating jewel on the west coast of Japan, boasting the spectacular backdrop of the snow-capped Tateyama Alps directly on the Sea of Japan. The port city combines modern architecture and centuries-old traditions in an inspiring atmosphere characterized by fresh sea air and majestic mountain views. Highlights include the architecturally brilliant Toyama Glass Art Museum and the Fugan Canal Kansui Park with its idyllic waterways. At the same time, the nearby picturesque Amaharashi Coast beckons with its legendary views of the peaks over the ocean. Cruise ships dock at the Fushiki District Cruise Pier, from which the center of Toyama is easily accessible in about thirty minutes thanks to efficient shuttle bus connections or the JR rail line.
Fushiki-Toyama Port, the primary cruise port for Toyama, is located in an industrial area and is situated slightly away from Toyama city center, though it is closer to the city of Takaoka. Convenient arrival at the ship is made possible by the cruise lines themselves, which often offer shuttle buses from the train stations.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Toyama Airport (TOY), located about 7 kilometers south of Toyama city center. For travelers from the DACH region, Toyama is usually reachable via an international hub in Japan, such as Tokyo-Haneda (HND) or Tokyo-Narita (NRT), from where domestic connecting flights to Toyama Airport are offered. From Toyama Airport, you can easily reach JR Toyama Station by bus in about 23 minutes for ¥1200–¥1400, or by taxi in about 11 minutes for ¥4100–¥4900.
Train
JR Toyama Station is a central hub directly connected to Tokyo (approx. 2 hours 10 minutes) and Kanazawa (approx. 20 minutes) via the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Since Fushiki-Toyama Port is about a 50-minute drive from Toyama City and 20 minutes from Takaoka, cruise lines almost always offer free shuttle buses from JR Toyama Station or JR Takaoka Station directly to the cruise terminal. JR Takaoka Station is located closer to the port, with a driving time of about 20 minutes.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Transfers to the Terminal
Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the industrial location of Fushiki-Toyama Port, an overnight stay in Toyama City or Takaoka is recommended on the day before embarkation. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise and gives you the opportunity to use the convenient shuttle buses offered by the cruise lines, which will bring you to the terminal on time. Private transfer services are also bookable from Toyama Airport to the city center, offering additional comfort.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
