Port information & tips for Porto Antigo
Porto Antigo is an idyllic jewel in the heart of the Douro Valley and a fascinating destination for river cruises in Northern Portugal. The region impresses with its terraced vineyards, a peaceful river landscape, and the elegant flair of a historic estate right on the waterfront. Visitors can discover the Serpa Pinto Museum in Cinfães, admire the impressive Romanesque architecture of the surrounding area, and also enjoy the region's premium wines in the neighboring quintas. Ships dock directly at the Cais de Porto Antigo, which is located right on the riverbank and, thanks to its prime location, provides convenient access to the natural beauty as well as the charming villages of the Douro region.
For ocean cruises from the DACH region, the relevant port of call in Portugal is not Porto Antigo, but the modern Porto Cruise Terminal in Leixões. Opened in 2015, this terminal is located in Matosinhos, just a few kilometers from the vibrant city of Porto, and offers a comfortable arrival thanks to excellent transport connections.
Airplane
Porto Airport (OPO), also known as Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, is the closest and therefore ideal for arrival. It is located only about 7 to 11 kilometers from the cruise terminal. A taxi ride to the terminal is very quick due to the short distance, taking only around 11 to 13 minutes and costing between 9 and 13 Euros. In addition, various private transfer services are available, guaranteeing a comfortable and direct ride to the ship. Due to the usually longer flights from the DACH region, we recommend a relaxed arrival the day before with an overnight stay in one of the charming hotels in Porto.
Metro & Train
The connection to the public transport network is excellent: the Matosinhos Sul metro station (Blue Line A) is just a short, approximately 5 to 8-minute walk from the port exit. From there, you can reach Porto city center, for example the Trindade, Bolhão, or São Bento stations, in a comfortable 15 to 30 minutes. For the journey, you will need the rechargeable Andante card, which costs around 0.60 Euros, with a single journey costing about 1.80 Euros and a 24-hour card available for 7.50 Euros. The central São Bento train station, famous for its azulejo art, can be easily reached from the Trindade metro station via metro line D.
Car & Parking
The Porto Cruise Terminal in Leixões is easily accessible by car thanks to good road connections. The terminal itself has parking facilities both along the pier and in an indoor area, allowing for a flexible short- or long-term parking solution right by the ship. This offers guests arriving in their own vehicle direct and stress-free access to the embarkation area.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
