Kalocsa is a fascinating jewel in the Hungarian Puszta and is considered one of the oldest and most significant cultural centers in the country. The city on the banks of the Danube impresses with its baroque charm, the world-renowned tradition of paprika cultivation, and magnificent architecture. Kalocsa, the charming paprika capital of Hungary, is a popular port of call for Danube river cruises. The port is idyllically situated on the left bank of the Danube, approximately 7 kilometers outside the city center, which river cruise guests can easily reach via cruise line transfer.

Car

For those arriving by car from the DACH region, the route usually leads through Austria and then onto well-developed Hungarian trunk roads. From Budapest, you can reach Kalocsa directly via the M6 motorway heading south, followed by the M8 and Main Road 51. The driving time from Budapest is about 1 hour and 48 minutes for the approximately 123 to 124 kilometer long route. Parking is available at the port itself, and local parking spaces for short-term and long-term parkers can also be found in Kalocsa.

The nearest international airport for travelers from the DACH region is Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD). It is the central hub of Hungary and offers numerous direct connections from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Budapest Airport (BUD) is approximately 100 to 140 kilometers away from Kalocsa.

The port of Kalocsa is located on the banks of the Danube in the Meszes district and offers easy access to the historic city center thanks to well-coordinated transfers and local connections.

Shuttle Buses

Organized shuttle buses from the cruise lines usually wait for passengers directly at the pier, providing a direct onward journey to the city center, which is about five kilometers away. This connection is the most comfortable way to reach the famous sights around Trinity Square and the Paprika Museum.

Taxi

Taxis are available at the port and offer a fast and flexible way to transfer to the center or nearby attractions. Thanks to the well-maintained roads, the journey takes only about ten minutes and can also be easily coordinated for the return trip from the main square.

On Foot and by Bicycle

A walk to the center takes about 60 minutes and follows flat paths along a shaded avenue directly to Kalocsa. Many visitors also enjoy using the flat cycle paths and the rental bikes often available on board to explore the surroundings actively and relaxedly at the same time.

It offers fascinating insights into glorious history as well as famous Hungarian folk art. Thanks to the impressive architecture and the precious library within the palace, you will experience a first-class cultural highlight in a stately atmosphere. The well-maintained paths and cozy cafes around the quarter also invite you to linger and relax while enjoying regional specialties. Ideally, visit the Cathedral in the early morning to enjoy the special lighting in the magnificent interiors, and return to the ship at midday, on time and full of new impressions.

Returning to the ship

The return journey from the charming paprika town of Kalocsa to the ship pier in the Meszes district can be easily arranged thanks to the excellent organization of the cruise lines and local service providers.

Taxi

You can find taxis directly at the central Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér) or can conveniently have one called through the reception of the larger hotels. The short trip to the port takes about ten minutes and ensures a punctual and relaxed return on board.

Shuttle Bus

Since the city center is located about seven kilometers from the port, most cruise lines provide their own shuttle buses. These depart regularly from central meeting points, such as the bus parking lot near the cathedral, and take you directly back to the pier.

On Foot

For active guests, the well-maintained path along Meszesi út is an ideal choice, connecting the city directly with the banks of the Danube. Thanks to the flat route and clear orientation, you will reach the port in about 60 to 70 minutes while enjoying the vast Hungarian landscape.
