Port information & tips for Tournus
Tournus is a picturesque gem in the heart of Burgundy and, as a major stop on the Saône, captivates with its deeply rooted historical charm. The small town enchants visitors with an idyllic riverside promenade as well as an authentic French way of life amidst rolling vineyards and world-class gastronomy. Cultural highlights include the impressive Saint-Philibert Abbey, a globally esteemed masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, as well as the fascinating Hôtel-Dieu with its magnificent historic apothecary. River cruise ships dock directly at the centrally located Quai du Midi, from where the winding old town and all major sights can be easily explored on foot in just a few minutes thanks to the prime location.

Since it is a river port, there is usually a central mooring area without extensive terminal structures.

Tournus is excellently connected to the French motorway network. The Autoroute A6 (Autoroute du Soleil) passes directly by Tournus, with its own exit (Exit 27, Tournus). Arrival is therefore straightforward. In Tournus itself, there are public parking options, often close to the moorings. For longer cruises, it is recommended to check the exact parking options with the respective cruise line or local providers in advance.
Train
Tournus train station is centrally located and easily accessible. Trains from Paris (Gare de Lyon) via Dijon and Lyon stop here, enabling a comfortable journey by TGV and a transfer to regional trains. From larger cities in the DACH region, you can reach Tournus via Paris or Lyon. From the station, the moorings are usually within walking distance of just a few minutes or reachable via a short taxi transfer.
Airplane
The nearest major airport is Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS), located around 120 kilometres south of Tournus. There are good train connections from Lyon to Tournus, with the journey taking about 1 to 1.5 hours. Alternatively, Geneva Airport (GVA) is an option, albeit with a longer journey of around 170 kilometres. For a relaxed arrival, we recommend booking a transfer through the cruise line or taking a taxi/rental car from the airport to get directly to the moorings in Tournus. Arriving the day before with an overnight stay in Lyon or Tournus can be sensible for late flights or a stress-free embarkation.

The pier in Tournus boasts an excellent location directly on the banks of the Saône and offers an ideal starting point for exploration. Thanks to the short distances, you can walk directly from the ship into the historic core of this small Burgundian town.
On Foot
The historic old town and the famous Saint-Philibert Abbey can be reached in about 5 to 10 minutes. The path leads along the riverside promenades directly into the charming alleys with their welcoming restaurants and small shops.
Regional Train (TER)
Tournus train station is within easy walking distance of the ship berths and can be reached in around 10 minutes. From there, regional trains provide fast connections to nearby cities such as Mâcon or Chalon-sur-Saône, offering high flexibility for individual excursions.
Bicycle
Tournus is located directly on the Voie Bleue, an excellently developed cycle path along the Saône. Thanks to this direct connection, the picturesque river landscapes and surrounding vineyards can be discovered in a relaxed way, with rental bikes often available right near the port.

The majestic abbey is considered one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe and impresses visitors with its light-filled architecture as well as its mysterious, centuries-old crypts.
Altstadt & Saône-Ufer
The picturesque quarter around the harbor invites you on a tour of discovery with its pastel-colored house facades and, thanks to the well-maintained riverfront promenade, offers the perfect setting for a delightful break in one of the first-class restaurants directly on the water.
Hôtel-Dieu de Tournus
This former hospital from the 17th century houses one of the best-preserved historic pharmacies in France and also grants fascinating insights into medical history as well as the important works of the local painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze.
Abbaye Saint-Philibert
The majestic Abbaye Saint-Philibert is located just a few minutes' walk from the ship pier and is considered one of the most significant masterpieces of early Romanesque architecture in Europe. Thanks to the impressive architecture and the light-flooded vaults, a particularly peaceful atmosphere prevails here, which is also perfectly rounded off by the charming surrounding alleys with their inviting cafes and regional specialty stores. Ideally, visit the abbey directly in the morning to experience the fascinating play of light and shadow in complete peace and then stroll relaxed through the historic old town back to the harbor.
The return journey to the mooring on the Saône is extremely straightforward and relaxed, thanks to the town's central location. You will reach your ship punctually while enjoying the view of the picturesque river landscape.
On Foot
The most significant sights, such as the Abtei Saint-Philibert, are located in direct proximity to the riverbank and allow for a short walk back to the pier. Simply orient yourself by the town's prominent church towers and walk through the charming alleys of the old town directly to the Quai de Saône.
Taxi
If you wish to return from more distant points or the train station, you can find taxis at the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville as well as directly at the train station (Gare de Tournus). Thanks to the short distances, the ride to the port is quick and will bring you safely and timely to your ship.
Orientation and Safety
The way to the port is well signposted throughout, and the wide riverside promenade offers a clear and safe environment for the walk back. In addition, the mooring points are easily visible from many parts of the town, which further facilitates orientation towards the water.
