Port information & tips for Otaru (Sapporo)
Otaru is the charming maritime gateway to the North Japanese island of Hokkaido and impresses with its historic harbor atmosphere not far from the vibrant metropolis of Sapporo. The city enchants visitors with a nostalgic flair, characterized by beautifully preserved stone warehouses and romantic waterways. Cultural highlights include the picturesque Otaru Canal, the busy Sakaimachi Street with its exclusive glass art shops, and the world-famous Music Box Museum. Cruise ships usually dock at the modern Katsunai Pier, from which the city center and historic sights are easily accessible in just a few minutes on foot or by shuttle thanks to the prime location.

There are direct train connections (Rapid Airport) from New Chitose Airport to Otaru, which take about 73 minutes depending on the connection. Given the long journey from the DACH region, we recommend staying overnight in Sapporo or Otaru the day before embarkation to start your cruise relaxed. In addition, private transfer services are available, which will take you directly from the airport to the port in about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Train
Otaru is perfectly connected to the Japanese rail network. The central station is JR Otaru Station, from where you can reach the cruise terminal and surrounding sights such as the Otaru Canal in just 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Trains on the JR Hakodate Main Line run regularly from Sapporo Central Station to Otaru. The journey takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the type of train.

For arrival by car, National Route No. 5 leads directly to Otaru. From Sapporo, use the Sasson Expressway (toll road) and take the Otaru IC exit. From there, you will reach the city center, where the port is also located, in about 10 minutes. Several public and private parking lots are available near the Otaru Canal and the port, including coin-operated parking and special tourist parking lots.

On Foot

Otaru Sansaku Bus
The charming Otaru Sansaku buses, often referred to as Stroller Buses, regularly connect the port with all major sights and the train station. These lines are specifically tailored to visitors and also offer a convenient connection to the Tenguyama Ropeway and the historic glassblowing shops.
Taxi
Numerous taxis wait directly at the terminal exit for the arrival of the ships and offer a quick transfer to destinations throughout the surrounding area. The ride to the city center takes only a few minutes and, thanks to the excellent local service, allows for a relaxed journey to more distant viewpoints.

Otaru Canal & Sakaimachi Street

Mount Tengu (Tenguyama)

The cultural center of the nearby prefectural capital is easily reachable by train and impresses with its extensive gardens and proximity to the famous TV Tower, making the park the perfect starting point for exploring Hokkaido's modern side.
Sakaimachi District & Otaru Canal
The historic Sakaimachi District, with its famous Otaru Canal, is just a relaxed, approximately twenty-minute walk or a short taxi ride from the cruise terminal and offers an enchanting backdrop of Victorian gas lamps and listed warehouses. This location delights cruise guests with its unique blend of Japanese craftsmanship, first-class sushi restaurants, and the famous Music Box Museum in a nostalgic atmosphere. Thanks to numerous cozy cafes, such as the well-known LeTAO, and fine glassblowing studios, this area is also perfect for an extensive cultural stroll. It is best to visit the district in the morning to explore the charming shops in peace, and return to the harbor in the early afternoon to end the day in a relaxed manner amidst the maritime scenery.
The way back to the port of Otaru is very relaxed and safe, thanks to the central location of the berths and the city's excellent infrastructure.
Taxi
Thanks to the numerous taxi ranks at Otaru Station and near the famous Asakusa Bridge on the canal, you can get back to your ship comfortably and quickly at any time. In addition, taxis are available directly in front of major hotels such as the Hotel Nord Otaru and will take you reliably and directly to the terminal.
Shuttle buses and train
For cruise ships at Katsunai Pier, organized shuttle buses are usually available at Otaru Station, ensuring a punctual return to the pier. You can also reach the port area easily with the JR trains from Sapporo and get off at Otaru-Chikko Station to reach the port quickly thanks to the short distances.
On foot
From the picturesque Otaru Canal, you can walk directly to the central Minato-machi Pier in about ten to fifteen minutes, simply by following the clear signage. The path is safe thanks to the wide sidewalks and also offers a wonderful view of the water, making the return to the ship a pleasant conclusion to your excursion.
