Port information & tips for Kavala
Kavala, also known as the "blue city," is one of the most picturesque destinations in Northern Greece, nestled in a terraced fashion on the slopes of the Symvolo Mountains. This charming port city impresses with a fascinating blend of ancient history and lively Mediterranean flair, while the historic old town of Panagia sits majestically above the deep blue Aegean Sea. Architectural highlights include the massive Kamares Aqueduct, the imposing Byzantine Fortress of Kavala, and the magnificent Imaret with its oriental architecture. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located "Apostolos Pavlos" pier, which is situated right in the city center and, thanks to its prime location, provides a direct, short walk of just a few minutes to the main attractions and the bustling waterfront promenade.
Kavala, with its centrally located port "Apostolos Pavlos", is a charming gateway to the Aegean and easily accessible for travelers from the DACH region. The compact terminal directly adjoins the picturesque old town, allowing for short distances and a relaxed start to your cruise.
Airplane
Kavala International Airport "Alexander the Great" (KVA) is located only about 30 to 31 kilometers east of the port. Direct charter flights from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are available during the summer season, and there are also year-round connections via Athens. The travel time to the port is a pleasant 30 to 40 minutes by taxi or private transfer. Alternatively, you can use public buses that connect the airport with Kavala's central bus station.
Auto
Thanks to the modern Egnatia Odos highway (A2), Kavala is excellently connected to the Greek road network. From Thessaloniki, you can easily reach the port in about 1.5 to 2 hours of driving time (approx. 153-160 km). Paid parking spaces are available at the port of Kavala, allowing short distances to the terminal. Additional parking options can also be found in the city center.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Transfer
For a relaxed embarkation, especially after longer flights from the DACH region, we recommend staying overnight in one of Kavala's charming hotels the day before. The port is located close to the center, so many accommodations are within walking distance or require only a short taxi ride. Various transfer options are available to you from Kavala Airport (KVA), including taxi services and private shuttle providers, which will take you comfortably and directly to your hotel or to the ship.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
