Returning to the ship

Cooktown, located at the northern end of Queensland, is a historic and remote cruise port primarily visited by expedition and smaller luxury ships. The port area on the Endeavour River is manageable and can be easily explored on foot thanks to its central location.

Airplane

For guests from the DACH region, travel to Cooktown is usually a combination of a long-haul flight to Cairns (CNS) and a connecting flight or transfer. Cairns Airport (CNS) is the nearest major airport and is served by international and domestic flights. From there, Hinterland Aviation offers daily flights to the regional Cooktown Airport (CTN), which take about 45 minutes and provide spectacular views over the reef and rainforest. Cooktown Airport (CTN) is located only about 6-13 kilometers from the city center, and a local shuttle service or taxi will take you quickly from there to the port.

Rental Car

Traveling by rental car from Cairns is a popular option for travelers who want to explore the picturesque landscape. The main route is the fully paved Inland Route via the Mulligan Highway, which takes about 4 hours for the approximately 330-kilometer journey. It leads via the Kennedy Highway through Kuranda and Mareeba. Alternatively, the Coastal Route, partly via the Bloomfield Track, offers a scenic but more demanding 4WD track that takes longer and is not suitable for all vehicles. Parking is available at the port of Cooktown, for example at the Main Port Car Park for short and long-term parkers.

Pre-Cruise Hotel & Transfer

Given the long journey from Europe, an overnight stay in Cairns on the day before embarkation is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise adventure. From Cairns, you can then easily book an organized bus transfer via Trans North Bus & Coach, which takes you to Cooktown via the Mulligan Highway in about 4 hours and 45 minutes. Additionally, private transfer services from Cairns to the port in Cooktown offer a comfortable and direct connection to your ship.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
