Returning to the ship

For cruises to the unique Houtman Abrolhos Islands, a fascinating chain of islands off the coast of Western Australia, embarkation mainly takes place from Geraldton. Since the islands themselves have no tourist infrastructure, they serve as a destination for special expedition cruises and tours that promise an unforgettable nature experience.

Airplane

Travel from the DACH region typically takes place via Perth International Airport (PER). From there, you can easily reach Geraldton Regional Airport (GET) with a one-hour domestic flight operated by Qantas. Geraldton Airport is located about 15 minutes by taxi from the city center and the harbor, allowing for a quick onward journey.

Transfer & Shuttle

After your arrival in Perth (PER), there is the option to travel to Geraldton (GET) by domestic flight. Alternatively, comfortable long-distance buses or private transfers are available for the approximately 400-kilometer route to Geraldton, which take about 4.5 hours. In Geraldton itself, cruise line shuttles usually operate at the port, taking passengers from the ship to a central drop-off point in the city center, as the port is a secured area.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long journey from Europe and the transfer from Perth to Geraldton, an overnight stay in Geraldton before embarkation is highly recommended. Numerous hotels in the city center, such as the Ocean Centre Hotel, provide an ideal base for a relaxed start to your adventure. Some tour operators already include pre-cruise hotel stays in their packages, which often also include transfers to the port.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.

Getting around

Arrival at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands is directly by boat and, thanks to the pristine nature, offers convenient access to secluded beaches and coral reefs.

Tender Boats

Since cruise ships usually anchor off the coast, the ship's own tender boats will take you directly to the landing sites on islands such as East Wallabi Island or Beacon Island. These short trips already offer a wonderful view of the archipelago's clear, turquoise waters during the transfer.

On Foot

On the islands themselves, you move exclusively on foot and can reach picturesque bays and viewpoints via natural paths in just a few minutes. The paths lead you directly through the nature reserve and simultaneously offer the best opportunity to observe the rare flora and fauna up close.

Charter Boats and Scenic Flights

Local charter boats and small aircraft represent the primary connections between the island groups and to the mainland at Geraldton. These services offer you an exclusive opportunity to discover the extensive coral reefs and historic shipwrecks comfortably from the air or from the water.

Useful tips

Turtle Bay on East Wallabi Island

The picturesque Turtle Bay on East Wallabi Island is easily accessible with the ship's own tender boats and offers cruise guests one of Australia's most pristine white sand beaches as well as crystal-clear, turquoise water. Thanks to its sheltered location and the magnificent coral gardens right off the coast, this spot is ideal for snorkeling and also offers the rare opportunity to observe the native Tammar wallabies in their natural environment. The peaceful atmosphere of the island provides an excellent nature experience and is perfect for relaxing far away from civilization. It is best to visit the bay in the early morning to take advantage of the best underwater visibility and to fully enjoy the untouched silence of the island before returning to the ship relaxed and in time for lunch.

Returning to the ship

As the archipelago is a sensitive nature reserve with no fixed infrastructure, returning to the ship is only possible via the ship's own boats and tender points.

Tender boats and Zodiacs

The journey back to the ship starts directly at the designated landing points on the beaches, such as Turtle Bay on East Wallabi Island. Thanks to the regular frequency of the tender boats and Zodiacs, you will reach the gangway of your cruise ship safely and comfortably.

On Foot

The paths on the islands lead across natural trails and marked beach sections directly back to the landing zones. Since the visited islands are small and easy to navigate, you will find the way to the meeting point on the coast easily and without detours.

Organized Excursions

If you have participated in snorkeling excursions or scenic flights, you will be brought back directly to the agreed meeting point on the beach by the local guides. Coordination between the operators and the ship also ensures a punctual arrival before the last tender departure.
