Port information & tips for Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik, Baffin Island)
Pond Inlet, called Mittimatalik in Inuktitut, is a fascinating destination in the far north of the Canadian Arctic at the northern tip of Baffin Island. Its majestic location on Eclipse Sound offers a breathtaking backdrop of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and deep blue icy seas. Special highlights include the informative Nattinnak Visitor Centre with its cultural treasures, the impressive view of Sirmilik National Park, and authentic encounters with local Inuit art. Cruise ships anchor in the protected bay and bring guests directly to the central community pier by Zodiac. From this landing point, the picturesque town center is within easy reach in just a few minutes on foot thanks to the compact settlement structure.
Pond Inlet on Baffin Island is an extremely remote cruise port that is only accessible by air and sea. There are no traditional port facilities; embarkation usually takes place via Zodiac tender from the expedition ships.
Airplane
Pond Inlet Airport (YIO) is the nearest airport and the primary arrival option for guests from the DACH region. There are no direct flights from Europe; instead, connections are usually made via major Canadian cities such as Montreal (YUL) or Ottawa (YOW) to Iqaluit (YFB) and from there with domestic flights, mostly with Canadian North, to Pond Inlet. The flight time from Iqaluit to Pond Inlet is approximately 2 hours and 44 minutes.
Transfer & Shuttle
Pond Inlet Airport (YIO) is very conveniently located, only about 0.5 to 1.6 kilometers from the town center. The transfer to your accommodation or the embarkation point is therefore very short and takes only a few minutes, often by taxi or local shuttles. In the town itself, there is also an on-demand bus service for short distances.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and the remote location with potential weather-related flight delays in the Arctic, a pre-cruise overnight stay is strongly recommended. Hotels such as the Sauniq Hotel or the Black Point Lodge in Pond Inlet provide a comfortable base before your cruise. Alternatively, you can also plan a night in Iqaluit, the main hub for flights to Pond Inlet, to arrive for your onward flight relaxed and on time.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.

The port of Pond Inlet is picturesquely located on Eclipse Sound and, thanks to the central location of the landing site, allows for immediate exploration of the Mittimatalik community.
Zodiac Transfer
Since larger cruise ships anchor in the protected bay, the transfer to shore is conveniently carried out by zodiacs or the ship's own tender boats. These land directly on the beach or at the small boat pier and simultaneously offer a first panoramic view of the surrounding mountain ranges.
On Foot
The compact settlement can be easily explored on a walk, and all essential destinations are reachable within a short time. The Nattinnak Visitor Centre, as well as local art galleries and shops, are located only about 5 to 10 minutes from the landing site.
Local Taxis
Local taxis are available for trips to slightly more distant viewpoints or for those with limited mobility, usually waiting for guests directly in the landing area. These private transport services also offer a great opportunity to gain authentic insights into life in the Arctic through conversations with the drivers.
To make the most of your limited time in Pond Inlet, we recommend a combination of the cultural richness in the heart of the Inuit community and exploring the spectacular mountain landscapes.
Nattinnak Visitor Centre
Located directly on the shore, this cultural center offers fascinating insights into thousands of years of Inuit history and showcases high-quality artworks by local carvers as well as traditional artifacts in a modern exhibition.
Sirmilik National Park & Bylot Island
The view of the opposite island with its massive glaciers and rugged mountain peaks is an unforgettable experience. Furthermore, this protected natural area can be explored perfectly on guided Zodiac tours for observing seabirds and narwhals.
Salmon River
A hike along the picturesque riverbank leads you to the historical remains of the Thule culture, while simultaneously offering an ideal opportunity for spectacular landscape photography in the vast tundra plains.
Nattinnak Visitor Center
The Nattinnak Visitor Center is located in the immediate vicinity of the pier and offers you a deep insight into the vibrant Inuit culture and the impressive natural history of Baffin Island. Inside the bright rooms, fascinating exhibitions on local traditions and an excellent selection of authentic handicrafts directly from the community await you. Thanks to its central location, the center is the perfect place to learn more about life in the Arctic in a relaxed atmosphere while enjoying the wide view across Eclipse Sound to the snow-capped mountains of Bylot Island. Ideally, visit the center in the morning to experience cultural performances such as traditional throat singing in peace, and return comfortably to the ship about sixty minutes before departure.
The way back to the shore of Pond Inlet is safe and relaxed thanks to the manageable size of the village. Since the ships anchor in the bay, the central landing site on the beach near the Nattinnak Visitor Centre serves as a fixed starting point for your return on board.
On foot
From the Nattinnak Visitor Centre and the local cooperatives, the path leads over the unpaved roads directly back to the landing site on the shore. Orientation is easy, as the water and the outlines of your ship in Eclipse Sound are always visible, and expedition members point the way at prominent locations.
Zodiac shuttle
The return journey to the ship is comfortable with the ship's own Zodiacs or tenders, which depart from the beach at regular intervals. Plan a small time buffer for the last trip and enjoy the direct view of Bylot Island while the landing team assists you safely during boarding.
Local transport
For guests with limited mobility, local vehicles are occasionally available at the Visitor Centre or near the Northern Store to provide a short transfer to the shore. In addition, the close cooperation between the community and the expedition team ensures that all visitors reach the meeting point for the return trip punctually and safely.
