Cruise port Puerto de la Estaca (El Hierro)
Port information & tips for Puerto de la Estaca (El Hierro)
El Hierro is the southwesternmost and most pristine of the Canary Islands, serving as a true sanctuary for nature lovers as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The port of Puerto de la Estaca welcomes visitors with a tranquil maritime atmosphere and a wild volcanic landscape that radiates peace and authenticity. Highlights in the surrounding area include the quiet island capital of Valverde with the church of Santa María de la Concepción and the crystal-clear natural swimming pool of Tamaduste. Cruise ships dock directly at the Muelle de la Estaca, from where the city of Valverde, approximately seven kilometers away, can be reached comfortably in a few minutes via an impressive panoramic road thanks to local shuttle services and taxis.
Arrival at the cruise port of Puerto de la Estaca on El Hierro, the smallest and westernmost of the Canary Islands, is primarily by air and sea, as the island is not directly accessible from the European mainland. The port is conveniently located near the capital, Valverde, and is an easy starting point for your exploration of the island.
Plane
For guests from the DACH region, the flight first leads to one of the larger Canary Island airports, such as Tenerife North (TFN) or Gran Canaria (LPA), from where you can take connecting flights to El Hierro Airport (VDE). El Hierro Airport (VDE) is only about 8 to 10 kilometers from the port of Puerto de la Estaca. From there, you can easily reach the terminal by taxi in around 8 to 9 minutes, with costs of about 10 to 13 euros. Alternatively, local bus lines (e.g., line 10 and 11 with a change in Valverde) connect the airport with the port, with the journey taking about 1 hour 16 minutes and costing around 4 euros.
Ferry
The ferry is a popular and scenic way to arrive, especially from the neighboring island of Tenerife. Ferries operated by the shipping companies Fred. Olsen Express and Naviera Armas run daily from the port of Los Cristianos on Tenerife directly to Puerto de la Estaca on El Hierro. The crossing takes a pleasant 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes and offers you the opportunity to take your vehicle onto the island to explore El Hierro flexibly. The ferry port of Puerto de la Estaca also has parking facilities and a car rental station directly on site.
Arrival on El Hierro & Accommodation Recommendation
On El Hierro itself, the cruise port Puerto de la Estaca is the only passenger port and is therefore easy to find. For the short distance from the airport or ferry terminal to the cruise terminal, taxis and coordinated bus connections are available. Due to the longer journey from the DACH region, which usually involves several stages, we recommend a relaxed arrival the day before your cruise. Numerous hotels and accommodations in the island's capital Valverde, which is only about 7 kilometers away, or in other charming places on the island, offer an ideal base for a stress-free start to your cruise. There are also public parking spaces at the port itself.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the shipping company and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
