Cruise ships anchor in the sheltered bay, from where passengers can comfortably reach the new harbor pier at the quay by tender boat. From there, you can reach the charming town center with its colorful houses directly on foot after a short walk. Given the longer travel times to the island, a pre-cruise overnight stay in Scotland or on Skye is highly recommended to start your cruise experience relaxed.

Car

The Isle of Skye is connected to the Scottish mainland free of charge via the Skye Bridge, which allows for a flexible journey by your own car or rental car. From Edinburgh, you can reach Portree via the A87 in about 5 hours (approx. 380 km), from Glasgow in 5 to 6 hours (approx. 347 km), and from Inverness in around 2.5 to 3.5 hours (approx. 180 km). In Portree itself, you will find parking options, including at the central Somerled Square. Please note that some public parking lots have time restrictions for overnight stays. Local rental car providers in Portree and Armadale also offer the opportunity to be mobile directly on the island.

Airplane & Transfer

For guests from the DACH region, the international airports of Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA) serve as the primary points of arrival. Alternatively, Inverness Airport (INV) is the closest regional airport to the Isle of Skye. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, the onward journey to Portree by bus with a transfer takes about 7 to 8 hours, while a direct drive by car takes around 4.5 to 6 hours. From Inverness Airport, you can reach Portree by bus in about 4.5 hours or by car in approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Numerous taxi companies also offer comfortable direct transfers from all three airports to Portree.

Train & Bus

The Isle of Skye does not have its own train station. The nearest train stations on the mainland are Kyle of Lochalsh (with train connections from Inverness via the scenic Kyle Line) and Mallaig (reachable from Glasgow via the West Highland Line). From Kyle of Lochalsh, there are bus and taxi connections to Portree. From Mallaig, a ferry takes you to Armadale on Skye, from where you continue to Portree by taxi or limited local bus services. Public Buses (Stagecoach)

Buses operated by the Stagecoach company depart from the central market square and connect Portree with various parts of the Isle of Skye. This transportation option is an excellent choice for independent excursions and also takes you through the impressive Scottish landscape to well-known locations such as Dunvegan or Uig.

The Viewpoint „The Lump“

The prominent hill „The Lump“ with the historic Apothecary’s Tower is located just a short, ten-minute walk from the tender pier and offers you what is arguably the most spectacular panoramic view over the iconic colorful row of houses in Portree as well as the glistening waters of the Sound of Raasay. This well-maintained park area is ideal for a relaxed walk in beautiful nature and also impresses with its peaceful atmosphere far away from the busy main street. It is best to visit this viewpoint in the morning to take advantage of the perfect light for your souvenir photos, and plan enough time afterwards for a leisurely stroll through the charming boutiques and cafés at the harbor. Thanks to the central location, you can reach your tender boat at any time within a few minutes in a completely relaxed manner.

Returning to the ship

The return journey to the harbour of Portree is very straightforward and relaxed thanks to the compact size of the town. Since the ships are anchored in the bay, the central meeting point for returning to the ship is the pier at the end of Quay Street.

Taxi

You will find taxi ranks directly at the central Somerled Square and in the immediate vicinity of the Portree Post Office. Thanks to local providers such as Portree Taxis or Gus's Taxis, you can get back to the harbour basin comfortably and safely from more distant sights such as the Old Man of Storr or Dunvegan Castle.

On Foot

From the town centre, you can walk downhill in just a few minutes via Quay Street or Bank Street directly to the tender boat pier. The path is easy to find thanks to its prominent location below the colourful row of houses and also provides a wonderful sense of orientation directly by the water.

Local Buses

The central bus stops are located at Somerled Square and connect the most important excursion destinations on the Isle of Skye directly with the town centre. From there, you can reach the pier after a short walk and complete your stay on the island flexibly and punctually thanks to the regular connections.
