Port information & tips for Taiohae (Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands)
Taiohae is the pulsating heart of the Marquesas Islands, welcoming travelers to one of the most spectacular bays in French Polynesia. The horseshoe-shaped backdrop of Nuku Hiva impresses with its dramatic volcanic peaks and lush green vegetation, creating a mystical yet inviting atmosphere. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the impressive Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Marquises with its intricate wood carvings and the traditional tiki sculptures at the Pae Pae Piki Vehine ceremony site. As cruise ships anchor in the sheltered bay, guests reach the central Quai de Taiohae comfortably by tender boat and, thanks to the prime location, find themselves right in the heart of the village, where local markets and charming cafes can be explored within a short walk.
Taiohae on Nuku Hiva, located in the heart of the Marquesas Islands, is a picturesque port of call for cruises, typically reached by tender boat. Due to its remote location and the long journey from the DACH region, careful travel planning and a pre-cruise overnight stay are recommended.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region is primarily via long-haul flight to Fa'a'ā International Airport (PPT) in Tahiti. From there, the journey continues with a domestic flight, usually with Air Tahiti, to Nuku Hiva Airport (NHV). Please note that these domestic flights do not operate daily, which often makes an overnight stay in Tahiti necessary before the onward flight to Nuku Hiva.
Transfer & Shuttle
Nuku Hiva Airport (NHV) is located on the north side of the island, while Taiohae is in the south. The transfer from the airport to Taiohae usually involves a scenic drive across the island, which can take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Often, the transfer is organized by local providers or your cruise operator and may include a land bus transfer with a short boat ride across Taiohae Bay to reach the actual landing point in the bay.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long international flight to Tahiti and the subsequent domestic flight to Nuku Hiva, arriving at least one day before embarkation is strongly recommended. A pre-cruise stay in Tahiti allows for a relaxed arrival and avoids stress in the event of flight delays. There are also smaller accommodations on Nuku Hiva itself if arrival is desired on the day before the ship transfer.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will typically receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.

After your arrival by tender boat, you will find yourself directly in the charming center of Taiohae and can easily explore the island's capital. Thanks to the central location of the pier at Quai de Taiohae, the most important points of interest can be reached in a very short time.
On Foot
The tranquil village center can be perfectly discovered during a walk and leads you to the most important sights in about 5 to 15 minutes. The path along the waterfront promenade takes you directly to the local handicraft market as well as the impressive Notre Dame Cathedral and also offers constant views of the picturesque bay.
Four-Wheel Drive Taxis (4x4)
As the interior of Nuku Hiva is characterized by rugged mountain landscapes, comfortable off-road vehicles are available as taxis at the port. These specialized vehicles usually wait for passengers directly at the pier and allow for a comfortable ride to the archaeological sites in the Taipivai Valley or to the island's spectacular viewpoints.
Water Taxis and Boats
For excursions to remote coastal sections such as the Hakaui Valley, small boats and water taxis are available at the quay. These connections are the ideal choice for hikers and nature lovers, as they provide direct access to hidden bays while offering a relaxing crossing along the imposing basalt cliffs.
To make the most of your stay in Taiohae, we recommend focusing on the picturesque village center and the historic cultural sites in the immediate vicinity of the waterfront promenade.

This architectural masterpiece combines Christian symbols with the powerful aesthetics of Polynesian carving and also offers a wonderful tranquility in the shaded interior. The way there leads you along the picturesque shore promenade of Taiohae, where you can discover authentic handicrafts in small art galleries and at the local market. Ideally, visit the cathedral in the morning to enjoy the special light atmosphere and the pleasant coolness, and plan enough time afterwards for a relaxed café visit by the water before returning to the port about ninety minutes before the last tender boat.
