The Port of Colombo is the most important gateway to the Indian Ocean and, thanks to its location in the heart of the capital and a modern expressway, is efficiently accessible for international guests. Cruise ships dock at the Passenger Terminal, which directly borders the historic Colombo Fort district and allows for embarkation close to the city center.

Airplane

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is located approximately 35 kilometers north of the terminal and is served from Frankfurt, Zurich, and Vienna directly or with comfortable connecting flights. Thanks to the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway (E03), you can reach the port area from the airport in about 45 to 60 minutes.

Transfer & Shuttle

For the transfer to the ship, organized bus shuttles from the cruise lines as well as licensed airport taxis are available, utilizing the expressway for a swift arrival at the terminal. Additionally, numerous taxis and tuk-tuks are available at the Colombo Fort main railway station, located only about two kilometers from the port, for the short onward journey to embarkation.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long flight time from the DACH region and the time difference, we recommend arriving at least one day before departure and staying overnight in Colombo Fort or at Galle Face Green. Many of the hotels there are only a few minutes' drive from the port entrance, allowing for a relaxed start to your cruise and initial sightseeing in the metropolis.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

Numerous air-conditioned taxis wait for arrivals at the passenger terminal and provide comfortable rides to more distant attractions. Furthermore, onward travel can be organized very easily and with fixed prices thanks to local apps like PickMe or international providers like Uber.

On Foot

The city center and the historic core of Colombo can be reached from the port exit in about 10 to 15 minutes. The path leads directly into the Fort district, where travelers can also discover the Old Dutch Hospital and impressive colonial architecture during a relaxed stroll.

Ideally, start your excursion in the morning to experience the special atmosphere of the temple complex in peace, and plan your return trip to the port generously about two hours before departure to enjoy the vibrant dynamics of the city in a relaxed manner.

Returning to the ship

Returning to the Port of Colombo is straightforward thanks to the terminal's central location in the Fort district and can be easily integrated into your stay.

Taxi and Tuk-Tuk

Vehicles are available at busy locations such as the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct or directly in front of the entrances of major hotels like the Kingsbury and the Galle Face Hotel. For transparent pricing, use the PickMe or Uber apps and simply give the driver the name of your ship and Gate 1 or Gate 4 for access to the secured port area.

Cruise Shuttle

Many cruise lines provide comfortable shuttle buses that run at regular intervals between the city center at the World Trade Center and the passenger terminal. These buses take you directly back to the ship and offer reliable scheduling for your punctual return.

On Foot

From the historic Fort district, you can easily walk to the port entrance in just a few minutes and follow the clear signage to the terminal. The entire path in the area of the port gate is guarded by security personnel, allowing you a safe and well-oriented return to the berth.
