The picturesque island capital welcomes visitors with a relaxed atmosphere, well-kept alleys, and an impressive view of the opposite Pico volcano. Cultural treasures include the historic Igreja Matriz de São Jorge and the imposing Portão de Armas city gate, while nature lovers can enjoy the refreshing natural swimming pools of the Piscina Natural da Preguiça. Thanks to this prime location, it offers convenient, walking-distance access to cozy cafes, traditional cheese dairies, and the city's most important sights.
The port of Velas on São Jorge, a picturesque island in the Azores, is the central gateway for exploring this unique archipelago. Guests from the DACH region can reach it by plane combined with a convenient ferry crossing or a local transfer.
Plane
Arrival from the DACH region typically takes place via direct flights to Lisbon (LIS) or Porto (OPO) and from there onwards to the main airports of the Azores, São Miguel (PDL) or Terceira (TER). From these larger islands, there are regular inter-island flights with SATA Air Açores to São Jorge Airport (SJZ). São Jorge Airport (SJZ) is located only about 5 to 8 kilometers from Velas. A taxi will take you to the port in about 6 minutes, with costs amounting to approximately 10 to 11 euros. Due to the long flight times, arrival at least one day before embarkation is recommended.
Ferry
The port of Velas is an important hub for ferry connections within the Azores. The shipping company Atlanticoline offers year-round connections to the neighboring islands of the so-called "Triangulo" (Faial and Pico) as well as to Terceira and Graciosa. Especially popular are the short crossings from Madalena on Pico to Velas, which take about 1 hour and 20 minutes, or from São Roque on Pico, which is possible in just about 55 minutes. The ferry terminals in Velas are located directly at the main town.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Local Transfer
For a relaxed start to your cruise, a pre-cruise overnight stay on São Jorge or one of the larger Azores islands is recommended. In Velas itself, you will find comfortable accommodations such as the Hotel São Jorge Garden or MAGMA RRAL3529. Thanks to the manageable size of São Jorge and the good roads, island explorations can be easily organized from the port. Taxis and rental cars are available on-site, although the latter should be booked early, especially in the summer months. Public parking is available in the port area of Velas and is mostly free of charge.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
