Airplane
For international guests from the DACH region, traveling to New Zealand by plane is the most common choice. The nearest major airport is Christchurch International Airport (CHC), located about 144 kilometers north of Timaru, which offers international connections. From Christchurch, you can easily reach Timaru by InterCity bus in around 2 hours 40 minutes. Alternatively, Richard Pearse Airport (TIU), also known as Timaru Airport, is only about 10 to 12 kilometers from the port and offers domestic flights, for example to Wellington (WLG). A taxi from Timaru Airport to the port costs around 45-60 NZD and takes about 16 minutes.
Auto
Timaru is easily accessible thanks to its connection to State Highway 1. The northern access to the port is via Port Loop Road (SH78) directly from State Highway 1, while the southern access is via Heaton Street from King Street. Parking directly at the wharves is not permitted, but various public parking options are available in Timaru's city center. Guests arriving by rental car will find parking spaces downtown, from where a short transfer to the terminal is possible.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region, we recommend staying overnight in a pre-cruise hotel to start your cruise relaxed. Timaru offers charming and functional accommodation options. For example, the centrally located Grosvenor Hotel is within walking distance of the port and CBD, while the Panorama Motor Lodge is about 2 kilometers from the port and offers practical parking facilities. Hotels in Christchurch are also a good option if you arrive there a day in advance.
Check-in & Einschiffung
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
