Port information & tips for Basel
Basel is the charming gateway to Switzerland and a significant hub for river cruises on the picturesque Rhine. The city impresses with its unique location in the border triangle and combines historical elegance, thanks to its magnificent architecture, with a vibrant, modern art scene. Cultural highlights include the impressive Basel Minster with its red sandstone facade, the picturesque Mittlere Brücke, and the winding alleys of the historic Old Town. Cruise ships usually dock at Hafenbecken 1 in Kleinhüningen or at the central piers in St. Johann, from where the city center is easily accessible within a very short time thanks to excellent tram connections or a short walk along the green riverbank.
Basel is the most important starting point for Rhine cruises in the border triangle of Switzerland, Germany, and France, and is easily accessible from all three countries. The three central docking points, St. Johann, Klybeck, and Dreiländereck, are quickly and comfortably reachable thanks to the city's efficient infrastructure.
Car
Via the A5 motorway from Germany and the A2 and A3 from Switzerland, you can reach the terminals in the Basel city area directly. Near the harbor, guarded parking garages and specialized Park & Cruise providers are available, offering a convenient transfer service including luggage transport directly to your ship's gangway. Furthermore, clear signage ensures easy orientation directly from the national border.
Train
With the Basel SBB and Basel Badischer Bahnhof stations, the city boasts two excellently connected hubs for international long-distance travel with ICE, EC, and RJ connections. From both stations, you can reach the ship docks in just ten to fifteen minutes comfortably by taxi or via the Basel public transport lines (BVB). Arriving by rail is particularly relaxed thanks to the high frequency of services and the central location of the stations.
Airplane
The cross-border EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) is located only about 15 minutes by car from the cruise terminals and offers numerous direct connections from throughout the DACH region. Alternatively, Zurich Airport allows for a comfortable arrival in about one hour via direct train connections. On-site, shuttle services, taxis, or bus line 50 ensure a seamless transition from plane to ship.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the port and consider that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
