Port information & tips for Dragon Hill (Santa Cruz, Galapagos)
Dragon Hill, also known as Cerro Dragón, is a fascinating natural jewel on the northwest coast of Santa Cruz and is considered one of the most scenic places in the Galapagos Archipelago. The region impresses with its untouched volcanic landscape and an atmosphere of complete silence, where the unique fauna takes center stage. Along the circular trail, visitors discover a significant population of endemic land iguanas, observe elegant flamingos in the saline lagoons, and enjoy a spectacular panoramic view from the summit of the hill. Arrival is by wet landing directly at the natural Dragon Hill Landing Site, which is located far from the busy main town of Puerto Ayora and, thanks to this seclusion, enables an exclusive and authentic nature experience in the heart of the national park.
Travel to the exclusive visitor point Dragon Hill on Santa Cruz Island typically takes place via Seymour Airport on the neighboring island of Baltra, followed by land and water transfers. Since this destination is located in the northwest of Santa Cruz, guests usually reach the region comfortably as part of an expedition cruise starting from the island's central docks.
Airplane
For travelers from the DACH region, the journey first leads through the Ecuadorian metropolises of Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE), which are regularly served by European hubs such as Madrid or Amsterdam. From there, daily connecting flights depart for Seymour Airport (GPS) on Baltra, which serves as the main gateway to the Galápagos Islands thanks to its modern and ecological design.
Transfer & Shuttle
After landing on Baltra, use the official shuttle bus to the Itabaca Channel, where a short ferry crossing leads directly to Santa Cruz. From the landing point, you can reach the port city of Puerto Ayora or the northern piers comfortably in about 45 minutes by taxi or public bus, where you can board your expedition ship directly and set off toward Dragon Hill.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and the strict schedules of the National Park Administration, an overnight stay in Quito or Puerto Ayora is recommended at least one day before embarkation. This allows for a relaxed start to your nature adventure and also offers the opportunity to explore the local infrastructure and the first sights of Santa Cruz in peace beforehand.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.

Dragon Hill, located on the northwest coast of Santa Cruz, is a pure natural harbor and is conveniently accessed directly from the ships by dinghy. Arrival at the shore is very comfortable thanks to organized logistics, allowing immediate access to the island's highlights.
Pangas (Inflatable Boats)
The transfer from the ship to the shore takes place using the ship's own pangas, providing a direct and dry exit at the landing stage. These maneuverable boats are the essential means of transport on-site and will bring you safely and quickly to the starting point of your discovery tour.
On Foot
The main attractions of Dragon Hill can be reached via a circular trail approximately two kilometers long, allowing you to explore the lagoons and the nesting sites of the land iguanas. The path is easy to walk and allows you to hike through the area in a relaxed manner in about 90 minutes.
Nature Trails
As Dragon Hill is a protected area within the national park with no road connections, the hiking trails serve as the only traffic routes and lead you safely through the flora. This infrastructure makes the use of taxis or buses unnecessary while simultaneously guaranteeing an undisturbed nature experience in the wilderness.
To make the most of your visit to Cerro Dragón, we recommend a combination of observing rare bird species in the lagoons and a hike to the island's viewpoints.
The Flamingo Lagoons
Located directly behind the shoreline are several hypersaline lagoons that, thanks to the resident flamingos and stilts, provide an impressive photo opportunity and are perfect for nature observation immediately upon arrival at the landing pier.
The Land Iguana Trail
A well-maintained circular path leads through a landscape of towering Opuntia cacti to the protected nesting sites of the yellow land iguanas and also offers a wide view over the entire bay from the hilltop.
The Coastal Zone at the Landing Site
The flat shore area at the foot of the hill impresses with its striking volcanic rock formations and, thanks to the clear water, is an ideal place to experience marine iguanas and playing sea lions in their natural habitat at close range.
Cerro Dragón & Flamingo Lagoon
The impressive region around Cerro Dragón is directly accessible via a landing with the tender boat and offers you an exquisite nature experience in the midst of the untouched wilderness of Santa Cruz. A well-maintained circular trail leads you to a picturesque saltwater lagoon, where you can frequently observe elegant flamingos, and further up to the prominent nesting sites of the majestic Galapagos land iguanas. Thanks to the elevated location, you also enjoy a spectacular panoramic view over the bay and the surrounding islands, making this place perfect for high-quality nature photography and peaceful moments. Ideally, plan your shore excursion for the early morning hours to take advantage of the milder temperatures and the special activity of the wildlife, and then return relaxed to your ship by tender boat.
The return journey from the hike at Dragon Hill to the landing point follows a well-marked nature trail and is optimally coordinated by the ship's own tenders. When marching back to the shore, plan some time for final wildlife sightings to arrive relaxed at the meeting point.
Panga Shuttle
The ship's own inflatable boats (pangas) serve as your direct shuttle service and will bring you comfortably and safely from the fixed landing site (dry landing) back to the ship.
Taxi & Water Transport
In this protected national park area, transportation is provided exclusively via your cruise ship's tenders, which guarantees you a coordinated and punctual return thanks to fixed schedules.
On Foot
From the viewpoint and the brackish water lagoons, the approximately 1.6-kilometer circular trail leads directly back to the coast, where the clear path marking allows for easy orientation to the agreed collection point.
