Port information & tips for Rovinj
Rovinj is one of the most picturesque towns on the Croatian Adriatic and a brilliant jewel on the Istria peninsula. The charming coastal town impresses with its authentic Mediterranean flair, winding cobblestone streets, and colorful house facades that rise gently above the glittering sea. Cultural highlights include the Baroque Church of Saint Euphemia with its striking bell tower, the historic Balbi's Arch, and the picturesque artists' street Grisia. Cruise ships usually dock at the central Molo Grande or at the Valdibora Pier, allowing travelers to arrive directly in the heart of the historic old town and explore all the sights comfortably on foot within just a few minutes thanks to the short distances.
The port of Rovinj is easily accessible from the DACH region thanks to its location on the Adriatic coast and good connections via road, plane, and ferry. Since Rovinj is a smaller port, there are usually no dedicated cruise terminals; instead, ships dock directly in the city harbor or at the designated quays.
Car
Rovinj is well connected via the Croatian highway network. The most important connection is the Istrian Y (A9) motorway, which leads directly to the vicinity of Rovinj and enables a fast journey from Slovenia and the wider European road network. In Rovinj itself, there are various public parking options, including larger parking lots like Valdibora or the underground garage at the bus station, which can also be used for longer periods. It is advisable to look for a parking space early, especially during high season.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Pula Airport (PUY), located about 40 kilometers southeast of Rovinj. This airport offers direct flights from various cities in the DACH region during the season. The journey from Pula Airport to Rovinj takes about 30 to 45 minutes by taxi or a pre-booked shuttle. For a relaxed arrival with longer flight connections, an overnight stay in Rovinj before embarkation is recommended.
Train
There is no direct train connection to Rovinj. The nearest major train station is in Pula, from where onward travel by bus or taxi is required. A much more practical option is to travel by train to Trieste (Italy) or Rijeka (Croatia), from where there are regular bus connections to Rovinj. The bus journey from Trieste to Rovinj takes about 2 hours, and from Rijeka about 1.5 hours.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
