Returning to the ship

Vathi, the picturesque main town of Ithaca, serves as an idyllic port of call for cruises in the Ionian Islands and is primarily accessible by plane followed by a ferry crossing. There is no classic cruise terminal in the traditional sense in this charming natural harbor; arrival and departure usually take place directly at the central pier.

Airplane

Arrival from the DACH region usually takes place via Kefalonia Airport (EFL), which is located on the neighboring island and offers direct flights or convenient connecting flights during the season. From there, you can reach the ferry port of Sami on Kefalonia in about 45 minutes by taxi or rental car to begin the short ferry crossing to Ithaca (to the port of Pisaetos, approx. 20-30 minutes travel time). Alternatively, Aktion Airport (PVK) on the mainland is an option, from where you can head to the ferry port of Astakos and use the longer ferry connection to Ithaca.

Ferry & Transfer

The island of Ithaca is only accessible by ferry. The main connection for cruise guests leads from Sami on Kefalonia to Pisaetos on Ithaca, from where a transfer to Vathi (approx. 15-20 minutes drive) is required. Ferry connections vary seasonally, so good planning in advance is crucial. From the mainland, there are ferry connections from Patras or Astakos to Ithaca, which, however, have longer crossing times.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the dependency on ferries and the sometimes limited frequency, especially outside the peak season, arrival at least one day before embarkation is recommended. An overnight stay in Vathi itself or in one of the charming villages on Ithaca allows for a relaxed start and offers the opportunity to explore the beauty of the island in advance. Suitable hotels for an overnight stay can also be found on Kefalonia, for example near Sami. Parking in Vathi is limited and mostly restricted to public parking spaces designed for short-term parkers.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
